Good things come to those who wait. That’s the message we’re taking from the story of Josh Avsec and Michelle Arendas, an American couple who connected on Tinder three years ago, but are only meeting for the first time now.
If we were to be so bold as to draw a parallel between this digital-age love story and business, we’d say it pays to remember that a long wait can lead to a big reward.
Running a business is hard work, and “overnight success” is usually years in the making. Just ask Josh.
He sent Michelle a message on Tinder introducing himself in September 2014, but, having deleted the app, she didn’t respond until she reinstalled it months later.
The pair kept the joke going for the next few years, waiting several months at a time to message each other back. Last week, Josh Tweeted a picture of the couple’s Tinder exchanges, saying: “One day I’m going to meet this girl and it’s going to be epic. Look at the dates of our Tinder texts.” The Tweet went viral, and Tinder took match-making a step further, sending the pair to Hawaii for a first date.
In business, as in dating, it can be tempting to jump the gun when you’re passionate about a new idea or opportunity, and launch before you have the right systems in place. But taking the time to plan and lay solid foundations sets you up to be in a position of strength.
Remembering that doing the hard yards at the beginning is the means to an end, and keeping your mind set on the end goal is perhaps the best way to stay motivated in the face of inevitable challenges.
This Tinder couple is a reminder that persistence is essential, and you should never give up … plus it’s just a great, feel-good story!
