Charity work a passion not just a job, says Appco UK employee
For the second summer in a row, Appco UK employee Faiza Abdulkadir (second from right) has headed to Africa to do charity volunteer work.
After a month in Kenya in 2016, Faiza this year headed to Burundi with Welcome Back to Africa, an organisation that brings together students from around the world with the aim of developing education in Africa.
The charity wants to build libraries in a range of countries, and part of Faiza’s trip was getting communities fired up about the project.
“These are the kind of resources many places in Africa are lacking, so they’ll give people a chance to learn in a way they couldn’t otherwise. It’s an opportunity for people to share expertise and skills, as well as creating jobs. The venue can also be used for other things, like community events.”
The visit was a chance to engage with university students, secure partnerships with local organisations, get support from the Government, and connect with local residents.
“There’s this misconception in Kenya that the only opportunity for people is in Europe, so it’s important that they see how they can make their own opportunities. It was a real highlight being able to show them that through our own stories – Welcome Back to Africa was set up by a group of students, and is now operating internationally. ”
Having worked in Appco UK’s contact centre since 2012, Faiza knows the charity sector well, and says her involvement in Welcome Back to Africa gives her even more motivation in her day-to-day job.
“It definitely makes me more passionate,” she says.
“I feel really privileged to be able to get up in the morning and know that I have a job where I can make a difference to a charity – whether it’s in the long run or short term.”
